Devika is a new sustainable fashion brand based in the UK founded by designer Devika Burman. Her designs are inspired by her worldwide travels and the amazing cultures she discovered along the way.
Her innovative designs are proof of her many cultural influences and demonstrate her ability to use a variety of styles, fabrics and objects to make her dresses.
Excellent Expressive Exhibitions
Devika Burman, founder of Devika Couture recently took part in several exhibitions where she could showcase her latest vintage collection. London Ethnic’s showcase of emerging designers for London Fashion Week September 2016 was one of many that she attended. During London Fashion Week 2016 in September at London Ethnic’s event, she had her own stand in which she presented her products; This exciting event was a challenge that she took on with determination to thrive and achieve her goals. The day started off by setting up early in the morning and ensuring that all her designs were being showcased effectively and each product had another complimenting it placed near by. As the day went on and the groups of people were hustling and bustling through the different rooms looking at the different talents that were at the London Ethnic’s showcase of emerging designers event, Devika Couture was recognised for the unique themes in the fashion brand. It was clear that the designer’s influence of the world was being portrayed effectively.
Another Exhibition that Devika attended was at Mahiki in London that was also organised by London Ethnic. This exhilarating exhibition was all about making those all important connections and networking with people in the fashion industry! The day was full of sociable people all excited to hear about the Devika Couture brand and what it was all about. Moreover, it was to meet and greet the designer behind it and get to know her true inspirations. As well as raising awareness of her own brand, Devika had the chance to discover about other brands and what kind of designs were emerging and becoming more popular in the market. It was an entertaining yet educational event that only progressed the brand further.
Exhibitions are something Devika flourishes in and loves to be a part of! The brand is quickly being established and events such as these have enticed buyers, press and influencers which has created a successful few months for Devika. It has also resulted in invites to many more exhibitions in the UK and internationally too, such as Dubai. Exhibitions have the perfect balance of raising awareness of your brand as well as seeing how much interest your brand evokes and how established your brand is and can be in the future! She is looking forward to going to the next few exhibitions that are lined up soon such as Break Through in Fashion 2017 in October and the next Mahiki event.
Inspiration of the Ages
Devika’s curiosity in history sparked the idea for her to develop a collection based on her interest; she decided to create designs that are stimulated by the historical eras that she believed were most influential. She did her trend research and started working on her vintage collection that has currently been showcased in exhibitions around the country.
Pleats is a big fashion trend that is coming back to season, they work well with maxi dresses, skirts especially. It correlates with an older vintage theme which Devika has incorporated within her vintage collections. However, she believes that her end product has a radical balance, like an object which has four equal points and says that it reflects the idea of out with the old and in with the new modern twist.
Devika believes that one of the greatest techniques was made by Madeline Vionnet during the 1930’s, she was working on ladies fashion from the 1930’s to 2000 and has effectively changed the face of beauty in Devika’s opinion; particularly with her crochet collars which included ribbons. Devika focuses on historical cutting styles and costumes for her collection, she produced some observation sketches and photos focusing on sleeves, collars, darts and bodices as well as visiting the V&A museum to develop her understanding of garment construction and get more inspiration on which fabrics to use for her dresses. For her masks, she was influenced by icons such as Grace Kelly and Audery Hepburn in the 1950’s and established these creative designs using the fabrics, colours, glitter make up, mask shapes and pattern loops that were similar to that time!

Introducing Devika Couture
As part of the launch of our new summer boutique- London Organic Fashion and Beauty Boutique, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce all the talented designers we are showcasing.
First up we have Devika Couture, which is a new sustainable fashion brand based in the UK and founded by designer Devika Burman. Devika found inspiration looking at cutting styles of corsets in historical costumes, fashion photography, film, music, art and culture. Her designs are based on movement, particularly focusing on the idea of radiant balance, like how an object has a centre and equal points. Devika also strongly relies on contemporary contextual studies to formulate her vintage styled collection, which also pays homage to late fashion icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.
We were fortunate enough to interview Devika about her collection during our ‘Press and Bloggers Day’ event which took place at our boutique on Saturday2nd June.
Interview as follows…
1.) Hi Devika. Thank you for coming by to our event today. Would you mind talking me through the story behind your brand and collection?
I first studied fashion design and dress making at the London School of Fashion, as well as graduating from Heriot Watt University with a BA in fashion marketing and retailing. Whilst undergoing my studies, my interest and passion for the fashion industry began to flourish immediately. With this being said, the knowledge from my education mixed with my life experiences encouraged me to work on starting a fashion brand.
Also, my love for radiant shapes and styles, and also of vintage/ Venetian looks enabled me to develop such unique and innovative pieces.
2.) How does it feel to be in the midst of other similar ethical fashion designers and brands?
Its great to be apart of this boutique with other collections and designers. Its a good opportunity for me.
3.)So today is our press and bloggers event. Can I ask you how important the social sphere, like blogging, Instagram, Twitter etc is to you and your business?
Its really important as you gain more knowledge about the market through using social media. Plus, it is great for making business and personal links with other designers and also the public.
4.) For the last question, can I ask you what do you think about the whole interactive element of today’s event, where the public/ bloggers/ models are coming in and trying on pieces from your collection?
Its really good for me to see how people style my clothes and my accessories. Also, its great publicity for my brand if people are seen wearing items in my collection and posting pictures of them online.
So, if you share Devika’s love for bright colours/ shapes and also have a passion for maintaining a timeless vintage style then be sure to come by and see the Devika Couture collection for yourself, as well as all the other designers we have in store here at 7 Thayer Street, Marylebone, London, W1U 3JH!
